In the first reading, Hannah has just given her son to the service of the Lord. She kept the promise she made when she had prayed for a son after being unable to have children. In the second reading, Abraham finds out that his barren wife Sarah will have a son in her advanced age.
Hannah rejoiced in God’s faithfulness to her. She had the faith to ask God for what she most desired, and then trusted that God would keep the word that was given to her through Eli. Abraham was not so sure!
Soon we will celebrate the arrival of another child. This one had also been promised and foretold long ago. God’s people had to wait even longer than Hannah and Sarah did, but God fulfilled his promise in his own time.
May we also have the faith to come to God and trust that he will answer in his own way and in his own time.
