Psalm 20; 1Kings 3:5-14; John 8:12-19
By Mary Ann Smith

As I read these texts, I found myself meditating on two themes:  1) God expects us to ask for what we want and 2) God blesses us with the “light of life” and honors our requests as we walk in His way.  It made me think of the old gospel hymn we sang when I was a child, “There Shall Be Showers of Blessing”. (p. 362 in the 1950 Covenant Hymnal) The first verse says:

There shall be showers of blessing.
This is the promise of love.
There shall be seasons refreshing,
Sent from the Savior above.
Showers of blessing,
Showers of blessing we need.
Mercy-drops round us are falling,
But for the showers we plead.

In thinking about the end of another year, I thank God for His many blessings and ask him to guide me to walk in His light in the new year.
