‘ACROSS RIVERS’ CHORAL CONCERT
“Across Rivers” is a graduate choral conducting recital given by Master of Music student Ethan Murphy, our choir director, featuring the University Singers and Chamber Singers from the University of Minnesota.
Repertoire in this concert includes music by Black composers paired with music by Western European composers of a similar style or era. Composers include W.A. Mozart (Austria), Jose Mauricio Nunes Garcia (Brazil), Edward Elgar (England), Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (England), Heinrich Schütz (Germany), Shavon Lloyd (United States), and Remel Derrick (United States).
The title of the recital is influenced by Langston Hughes’ poem “The Negro Speaks of Rivers”, acknowledging the contribution of Black musicians throughout time and across the globe.
